Quilling Tools: A Beginner's Guide
Quilling tools: work board, husking board, slotted tool, needle tool, tweezers, glue pot, skewer stick, quilling comb, and dome mold.
Quilling, the art of rolling thin strips of paper into various shapes and then gluing them together, is a delightful and creative hobby.
All you need are the following items to begin quilling:
Slotted Quilling Tool
This is the most fundamental tool in quilling. It's a slotted tool with a thin, pointed tip that helps you roll the paper strips tightly and evenly. Quilling tools come in various shapes and sizes, but the most common type is the slotted quilling tool.
Paper Strips
Quilling paper strips are available in a wide range of colors, widths, and thicknesses. The most common width for quilling is 3mm, but you can also find 1mm and 2mm strips. Choose the width based on your desired project and level of difficulty.
Scissors
A good pair of sharp scissors is essential for cutting the paper strips to the desired length. Precision scissors or craft scissors work well for quilling.
Glue
A high-quality craft glue is ideal for adhering the paper strips together. White school glue or PVA glue are popular choices. I like to use Aleene’s Clear Gel Tacky Glue and Bearly-Art Precision Craft Glue.
Tweezers
Tweezers are helpful for manipulating small paper shapes and for applying glue precisely. They can also be used to pick up dropped paper strips.
Small Paint Brush or a Skewer Stick
This is used to apply glue. I prefer to use a skewer stick.
As you get comfortable, you may want to try these other tools.
Quilling Needle
A quilling needle is a thin, pointed tool that is used to produce tight coils with a very minimal hole in the center as well as a smooth center on a loose coil. It can be used to insert glue into tight spaces or to help shape paper strips. It's optional but can be very useful for detailed work.
Quilling Template Work Board
Quilling templates offer a variety of pre-cut shapes that you can use as guides for creating consistent and symmetrical designs. They're especially helpful for beginners.
Quilling Comb
A quilling comb can create intricate flowers, leaves and other shapes.
Dome Mold
This is a helpful tool to shape your quilling coils.
Circle Sizer Template Ruler
This will help you make coils with a consistent size to shape or use as is.
Husking Board
This board uses pins that you layout a pattern with to create petals, leaves, wheatear’s and more.
Now that you’re aware of the tools, you're ready to start your quilling journey. Practice makes perfect. Enjoy!
